The Michigan Inland Lakes Convention: Protecting Lakes Today for Tomorrow

Every two years the Michigan Inland Lakes Convention brings together passionate lakeshore owners, lake scientists, policy makers, and conservationists to spark new ideas and inspire stewardship of inland lakes. This year’s convention theme is “Protecting Lakes Today for Tomorrow”, and it will take place virtually September 14-16 on Zoom.

Douglas Beach to Oval Beach- Private Cleanup, 9/17/22 in Douglas

Meet at Oval Beach Parking lot to sign in, get supplies and then depart for cleanup. Things to bring: gloves (if you have them), sunscreen, bug spray, Kitty Litter bucket with handle (if you have it). Hat, jacket etc, depending on weather.

Adopt-A-Beach @ Elberta Beach!

Each year, in in spring and fall, the Benzie Conservation District co-hosts with the Alliance for the Great Lake adopt-a-beach clean-ups We are always seeking volunteers to help remove trash and debris from the Lake Michigan shoreline. What makes this program special is that all of the results are tracked and the data is entered into an online system that helps to inform regional policy and educate the public.

Wetlands for Landowners: Exploring Michigan’s Wetlands Workshop

Eddy Discovery Center at Waterloo Recreation Area 17030 Bush Road, Chelsea, MI

We’ll head out to the field to examine a range of wetland types up close, to help you recognize wetlands that might occur on your land. We’ll look at some distinctive wetland plants, and consider wetland characteristics that make for good herp habitat. Be sure to wear long pants and close-toed shoes—be prepared for mud and poison ivy!—and bring a hand lens or loupe if you have one.

This event is free and open to the public, but space is limited.

Northern Michigan Volunteer Stream Monitoring Fall Session

Participants will spend approximately one hour learning about the importance of stream monitoring. A hands-on training session will follow at 6pm on Spencer Creek. Please dress for the weather. Refreshments provided. Alden, MI: Exact Location TBD
